1:400 Diecast: CAAC McDonnell Douglas MD-82 B-2101 (Yu Model YU0016)
McDonnell Douglas MD-82 B-2101, MSN 49140 (Line Number 1092), was delivered to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) on 12 December 1983 — one of the very first two MD-82s delivered into China, alongside sister aircraft B-2102. These initial two airframes arrived factory-assembled from Long Beach; subsequent CAAC MD-82s were licence-assembled at Shanghai Aircraft Manufacturing Factory (SAMC), making B-2101 and B-2102 the prototypes of what became China's first domestically relevant jet programme. In May 1988 the aircraft was transferred to China Eastern Airlines, and by April 2000 it had passed to Spirit Airlines as N816NK, giving B-2101 a fully traceable three-operator international history.
Livery & Visual Details
The model carries CAAC's scheme from the early 1980s period. The upper fuselage and engine nacelles are white; the lower fuselage and wing upper surfaces are a light metallic silver-grey. A blue cheatline with a repeating small-circle texture pattern runs the full length of the fuselage just below the window line. Chinese characters reading "zhongguo minhang" — the Chinese-language name for Civil Aviation of China — appear in black above the cheatline on the mid-fuselage. A blue CAAC bird-wings logo with "CAAC" lettering is positioned on the nose below the cockpit. The lower vertical stabiliser carries the national flag of the People's Republic of China: red background with large and small yellow stars. The registration "B-2101" appears in black on the tail. Engine nacelles are marked "Super 80" — the MD-80 series marketing name — on each side. Engines are twin rear-mounted Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofans. Conventional tapered wingtips, no winglets. Landing gear deployed.
Model Craft & Collectibility
Yu Model YU0016 is a diecast alloy MD-82 in 1:400 scale, 11.26 cm length, 8.21 cm wingspan. The CAAC MD-82 holds significant historical weight: China's first delivered MD-82, a type that shaped Chinese commercial aviation through the late 1980s and 1990s before Western jets replaced it. B-2101 specifically is the single most documentable registration in that history.
