ZS-SAJ is a Boeing 747-312, MSN 23027, line number 583, powered by four Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4G2 engines. The airframe was originally delivered to Singapore Airlines on 21 June 1983 as N116KB. South African Airways acquired and reregistered it ZS-SAJ, with delivery recorded on 12 January 1996. SAA named the aircraft "Ndizani" — a Zulu word meaning "Fly to Greater Heights" — and applied one of the most distinctive liveries ever carried by a wide-body aircraft: a full-coverage celebration of post-apartheid South Africa's rainbow identity. ZS-SAJ was also documented transporting a spare engine as a fifth pod, an operational capability unique to the 747's structural design.

Livery & Visual Details

The entire fuselage, tail, and stabilisers are covered in a vibrant abstract pattern of stylised human figures with raised arms, rendered in the five colours of the South African national flag: red, green, blue, yellow, and black on white. The nose radome is solid yellow-gold. "SOUTH AFRICAN AIRWAYS" appears in white on blue along the upper-rear fuselage and vertically along the tail's leading edge. A red Springbok logo is centred on the lower vertical stabiliser. Four engine nacelles are white with black intake faces. Classic straight 747-300 wingtips — no winglets.

SQ Wings L2022 reproduces this exceptionally complex livery at 1:200 scale in diecast metal, with the multi-colour figure pattern carried across the full fuselage surface via fine tampo printing. The 747-300's characteristic upper-deck extension distinguishes this mould from 747-200 variants. At approximately 13.91 inches in length, this is a substantial display piece. A limited edition produced for the collector market with scale model dimensions of approximately 35.3 cm length and wingspan approximately 32.4 cm.
