JA828J (MSN 38438, line number 70) was delivered to Japan Airlines on 9 April 2012, making it one of JAL's earliest 787-8 Dreamliners. The aircraft later carried JAL's celebrated "Studio Ghibli" special livery — a collaboration between Japan Airlines and the legendary animation studio behind My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. JA828J subsequently transferred to ZIPAIR Tokyo, JAL's low-cost subsidiary.

The model depicts the Studio Ghibli special scheme: a white base fuselage carries colorful cartoon characters and illustrations across the forward fuselage section in vibrant brown, red, yellow, orange, and green tones. The mid-to-rear fuselage features a large light-blue graphic panel depicting a stylized bird or crane figure composed of intricate floral and organic patterns in pink, green, yellow, and orange, with white cloud motifs. Japanese text characters appear in black above the windows integrated into the artwork. "JAPAN AIRLINES" is printed in black on the forward fuselage. A red JAL Tsurumaru logo and blue UNICEF logo appear near the rear. The vertical stabilizer carries the Tsurumaru crane-in-circle logo with "JAL" in red. Wingtips are the 787's raked type.
