1/400 Diecast: Silk Way Airlines Boeing 747-8F VQ-BVB (Phoenix).
The Pioneer of the Fleet: This aircraft (MSN 44444, Line 1493) holds a special distinction in the history of Azerbaijan's cargo giant. Delivered on August 22, 2014, VQ-BVB was the very first Boeing 747-8F to join the Silk Way West Airlines fleet, marking the beginning of the carrier's transition to next-generation widebody freighters. For over a decade, it has served as the backbone of operations from its Baku hub, connecting Europe, Asia, and the Americas under the proud flag of the Silk Road's modern-day successor. It rolled out of Boeing's Everett factory at Paine Field (PAE)—the legendary birthplace of every 747 since 1967.
The "Duck Strike" Incident: VQ-BVB earned a peculiar footnote in aviation lore on January 29, 2022. Departing Tokyo Narita as flight 7L904, the crew felt vibration and noticed an unusual smell in the cockpit just after takeoff. Despite the concerns, all systems checked normal, and the flight continued to Baku without incident. It was only the next morning that ground crews discovered the astonishing truth: the aircraft had struck and killed 33 ducks on takeoff, littering the runway with evidence of an encounter that the mighty 747 had shrugged off without a word. The runway was closed for 20 minutes to clear the scene—a bizarre testament to the sheer power and resilience of the 747-8F.
Still Going Strong: Powered by four General Electric GEnx-2B engines—the quietest and most fuel-efficient powerplants ever developed for the 747—VQ-BVB remains active in Silk Way West's fleet as of 2026. The airline operates five of these 747-8Fs alongside newer 777Fs, with ambitious plans to build a new cargo airport in Azerbaijan by 2027, cementing the country's role as a critical link in the modern Silk Road.
About this Model: Phoenix released this 1/400 scale diecast metal model capturing VQ-BVB in Silk Way's distinctive livery—the deep blue tail with the stylized logo, and "Silk Way West" titles across the white fuselage. Measuring 19.08 cm long with a 17.13 cm wingspan, the model features four detailed GEnx-2B engine fans, the characteristic 747-8 stretched upper deck, and accurate landing gear. For collectors of modern freighters, Central Asian aviation, or aircraft with unforgettable incident stories that ended safely, VQ-BVB represents the first of its kind for an airline that has become a powerhouse of global cargo.
