1:400 Diecast: Qantas Boeing 717-200 VH-YQS (Phoenix Models). This aircraft, named "Great Otway National Park," holds a special place in Australian aviation history—it operated the final Boeing 717 passenger flight in Australia under the QantasLink brand . On October 26, 2024, VH-YQS flew QF1511 from Sydney to Canberra, marking the end of over two decades of 717 operations for the Qantas Group .

Aircraft history: Built 20 years ago, VH-YQS (MSN 55178) was first delivered to US operator Midwest Airlines in February 2004 . It briefly operated for Mexico's MexicanaClick between 2009 and 2011 before being operated by National Jet Systems on behalf of QantasLink starting in 2013 . Over nearly 11 years with the QantasLink brand, it completed more than 15,000 flights, logged over 17,000 flight hours, and safely carried more than one million passengers .

The 717 era in Australia: The 717 first entered service with the Qantas Group when it acquired Impulse Airways in 2001 . Fourteen of the fleet were converted to support the launch of Jetstar in May 2004 before moving back under the QantasLink banner . Powered by Rolls-Royce Deutschland BR700 engines, the 717 was affectionately known as "Mad Dog" for its MD initials and distinctive engine sound . QantasLink was one of the last three commercial airlines in the world to operate the type, alongside Delta and Hawaiian Airlines .

About this model: Phoenix Models released VH-YQS capturing its final QantasLink livery—white fuselage with the red kangaroo tail. The 1:400 diecast features the T-shaped tail that made the 717 instantly recognizable and the Rolls-Royce BR700 engines mounted aft. For collectors of Australian aviation history, this model represents the final chapter of the 717 story in Australia, replaced now by the next-generation Airbus A220s operated under the QantasLink brand .
