RA-96002, MSN 74393201001, is one of only two Il-96-300 airframes built to full production standard in the first production batch. This airframe first flew in 1990 under the Soviet registration CCCP-96002 and entered service with Aeroflot. Its operational history spans the entire post-Soviet era: Aeroflot Russian Airlines, Feniks, Atlant-Soyuz Airlines, and Airstars Airways — the Russian charter carrier that operated it from August 2009. The airframe was subsequently returned to manufacturer Ilyushin in October 2011. The Il-96-300 carries four Aviadvigatel PS-90A turbofans, making it the only Russian-built wide-body still powered by domestically-developed high-bypass turbofan engines at this scale.

Livery & Visual Details

The model depicts the Airstars Airways livery. Upper fuselage and vertical stabilizer are deep dark blue; lower fuselage is light grey. A light blue curved stripe separates the two sections along the fuselage. The tail carries a white Airstars emblem against dark blue. A small Russian flag appears on the fuselage near the tail, with "RA-96002" in white. The nose section below the cockpit carries "IL-96-300" and "Ivan Shadrin" name text. Engine intakes feature dark blue intake lips on all four nacelles. Winglets at both wingtips are grey with dark blue outer surfaces. "AIRSTARS" with a star logo appears in dark lettering on the mid-fuselage. The registration RA-96002 is also printed on the right wing underside in large dark characters.

Model Craft & Collectibility

Phoenix rendered this at 1:400 in diecast metal. The Il-96-300 is among the rarest subjects in 1:400 scale: very few releases exist for this four-engine Russian widebody, and Airstars Airways ceased operations in 2015. This model documents a carrier that no longer exists, operating one of the last full-production Il-96-300 airframes.
