1:400 Diecast: CAAC Ilyushin IL-62 "2020" (Phoenix PH12016)
The Ilyushin IL-62 fleet of China Civil Aviation Administration (CAAC) represented China's first long-haul jet capability. Five aircraft entered service between 1971 and 1972, all purchased from the Soviet Union. The aircraft depicted here carries the early CAAC registration "2020" — later formalised as B-2020 (MSN 21203) after China adopted the B-prefix system in 1974. Delivered in April 1972, B-2020 was withdrawn from use in May 1987 and preserved at Yantai, Shandong. The IL-62 powered CAAC's first intercontinental route network: Beijing–Moscow, Beijing–Paris, Beijing–Bucharest, and diplomatic charter flights. In April 1974, a sister aircraft (B-2028) flew Deng Xiaoping to New York for the United Nations sixth special session — China's first trans-oceanic flight by a Chinese-registered airliner with a Chinese government delegation.
Livery & Visual Details
The model wears the CAAC period livery: white upper fuselage with a thin blue stripe running below the windowline, with a bold lightning-flash Z-shaped blue accent over the rear cabin and wing junction. The Chinese characters reading "中国民航" appear on the forward cabin above the windows. The registration "2020" — without B-prefix, as carried before 1974 — is displayed on the vertical fin below the Chinese national flag (red field, five yellow stars). Four Kuznetsov NK-8 turbofan engines are mounted in pairs at the rear fuselage, a layout unique to the IL-62. No winglets; straight classic tips. Nose gear deployed.
Model Craft & Collectibility
Phoenix Models PH12016 captures the IL-62 in 1:400 diecast, measuring 13.28 cm in length and 10.80 cm in wingspan. The rear-engine four-pack layout and T-tail profile make the IL-62 immediately distinguishable on any shelf. CAAC IL-62 models cover a machine type that never flew commercially outside the Soviet bloc and China — a Cold War-era intercontinental jet whose operational history is inseparable from Chinese aviation's first outward steps.
