The -823 subvariant belongs to the 737 Next Generation family and carries two CFM56-7B26 turbofans. In November 2015, American repainted this airframe in the TWA Heritage livery — one of a series of tribute schemes honouring the legacy carriers absorbed into American over the decades. Trans World Airlines ceased independent operations in April 2001 after its acquisition, making this 737 one of the airline's formal acknowledgements of that history.
