B-165 (MSN 24313) completed its first flight on 6 May 1993 and entered China Airlines service as a four-engine wide-body flagship. The Boeing 747-409 is powered by four Pratt & Whitney PW4056 turbofans. China Airlines was one of Asia's largest 747-400 operators through the 1990s and 2000s, deploying aircraft like B-165 on trunk routes across the Pacific and to Europe.
