1:400 Diecast: United Airlines Boeing 747SP N140UA (JC Wings XX4959)

N140UA carries MSN 21022 (Line Number 265). The airframe has a singular distinction in aviation history: it is the Boeing 747SP prototype, the first 747SP ever built, making its first flight on 4 July 1975 registered N747SP. Delivered to Pan American World Airways on 26 April 1976 as N530PA and named "Clipper Mayflower," the aircraft transferred to United Airlines on 11 February 1986 as part of the asset package when United acquired Pan Am's transpacific routes. Under United, N140UA operated long-haul transpacific services including San Francisco–Tokyo and San Francisco–Hong Kong. The aircraft was stored at Oakland in February 1994 and subsequently scrapped at Ardmore in November 1995.

Livery & Visual Detail

The model wears United's Saul Bass "Friend Ship" Tulip livery in its large-titles variant: white upper fuselage, a broad red cheatline along the window line bordered by a narrow dark-blue stripe below, and battleship-grey lower fuselage and wing undersides. "UNITED" in large black sans-serif capitals on the forward fuselage. The vertical stabilizer is white with the prominent red-and-blue stylized "U" Tulip logo. Registration N140UA and a small American flag appear above the window line on the forward fuselage. Four underwing engines in silver/natural-metal nacelles. The 747SP's characteristic taller vertical stabilizer and markedly shorter main fuselage aft of the wing are accurately reproduced compared to the standard 747-200/400 silhouette. Conventional squared wingtips, no winglets.

Model Craft & Collectibility

JC Wings XX4959 renders the 747SP in 1:400 diecast alloy. N140UA is the only 747SP prototype that ever existed — no other airframe shares that manufacturing designation. For collectors of the 747SP type (only 45 built), United Airlines subjects, or first-flight anniversary milestones, this specific MSN carries documentary weight no other 747SP model can replicate.
