1:200 Diecast: Southwest Airlines Boeing 727-200 N569PE "Desert Gold" (JC Wings XX2392)

N569PE represents Southwest Airlines' brief but historically notable foray into trijet operations. Southwest acquired a fleet of seven Boeing 727-200 aircraft from 1978, operating them through 1985 as the airline expanded beyond its original Texas intrastate footprint following the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. The 727-200 offered greater capacity than the 737-200 then forming Southwest's core fleet, though the airline ultimately returned to an all-737 strategy that became its defining operational model. N569PE flew in the "Desert Gold" livery — one of Southwest's most visually distinctive pre-modern color schemes.

Livery & Visual Details

The Desert Gold scheme covers the upper two-thirds of the fuselage in highly reflective metallic gold, divided from the lower third by a thin white stripe. The lower fuselage and belly are painted red, which extends forward to the nose. "SOUTHWEST" appears in large block letters on the forward fuselage in dark text against the gold section. The vertical stabilizer is silver-gray with a red band running along the leading edge. The Boeing 727-200's distinctive trijet configuration is fully rendered: two underwing-flanking rear-fuselage engines on either side, and the center S-duct intake integrated into the base of the T-tail, with the exhaust exiting below the horizontal stabilizers. Classic straight wingtips without any winglet devices are present, consistent with the early production 727 standard.

Model Craft & Collectibility

JC Wings XX2392 is a 1:200 diecast metal model. The Southwest 727-200 is a rare type in any scale — the airline retired the fleet more than 40 years ago, and active models representing this era are limited. The Desert Gold livery predates Southwest's more widely known red-heart-and-blue scheme, making this a niche piece for Southwest or trijet-era collectors. Model dimensions: 23.35 cm length, 16.46 cm wingspan.
