XA-MEF carries MSN 22158, line number 1642, a Boeing 727-264 Advanced operated by Mexicana de Aviación — the Mexican carrier that flew from 1921 until ceasing operations in 2010. The aircraft was individually named "Tula," a reference to the pre-Columbian archaeological site in Hidalgo State. XA-MEF served Mexicana on domestic and regional Latin American routes during the airline's fleet modernisation era before retirement.

Livery & Visual Details

The livery is one of Mexicana's most visually distinctive schemes. The entire vertical stabilizer and the housing of the S-duct centre engine are covered in a rich Talavera-style mosaic pattern — interlocking geometric and stylised floral motifs in deep blue and white, drawn directly from the folk-art ceramic tradition of Puebla and Tlaxcala. "MEXICANA" runs in bold black capitals along the lower fuselage; the individual name "Tula" is rendered in a stylised script above the window line with "XA-MEF" beneath it.
