N278WA represents one of the most unusual chapters in El Al's operational history. The McDonnell Douglas MD-11ER — the extended-range passenger variant — was never directly owned by El Al Israel Airlines. This aircraft, MSN 48746 (Line Number 597), was delivered on 1 March 1996 to World Airways and operated on El Al's behalf under a wet-lease arrangement, supplementing capacity on long-haul routes during the late 1990s. The registration N278WA was retained throughout El Al's use of the aircraft, making it distinctive among El Al-liveried jets that almost universally carry Israeli 4X-registrations. The MD-11ER designation signifies increased fuel capacity and range over the baseline MD-11, powered by three General Electric CF6-80C2D1F turbofans. El Al's association with the type was brief — the airline's MD-11 chapter lasted only a few years — which explains the relative scarcity of models depicting this combination.

Livery & Visual Details

The model carries El Al's classic late-1990s livery: white fuselage with a blue cheatline running the full length, and blue "EL AL" title in both Latin and Hebrew script (Hebrew: "אל על") on the upper forward cabin. The white vertical stabiliser bears the blue Star of David (Magen David) centred on the fin. Three GE CF6 nacelles in grey. No winglets on the MD-11ER. N278WA registration appears on the rear fuselage. Rolling gear extended.
