B-2172, MSN 48496, entered service with China Eastern Airlines on 22 May 1992 as one of five passenger MD-11s the carrier took delivery of from McDonnell Douglas. The aircraft later transitioned to freighter configuration and was transferred to China Cargo Airlines on 18 March 2005, continuing operations as a tri-jet freighter before its eventual retirement and re-registration as N955AR with Sky Lease Cargo.
