RA-87842 is a Yakovlev Yak-40 operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, one of Russia's specialist cargo carriers. The Yak-40 is a Soviet-designed short-range trijet regional aircraft, produced from 1966 through 1981 at the Saratov Aviation Plant. Over 1,000 airframes were delivered. Volga-Dnepr, based in Ulyanovsk, is best known for its Antonov An-124 heavy-lift operations; the Yak-40 represents the smaller, passenger-oriented end of its fleet history.
