1:200 Diecast: Volga-Dnepr Yakovlev Yak-40 RA-87842 (Herpa HE573146)

RA-87842 is a Yakovlev Yak-40 operated by Volga-Dnepr Airlines, one of Russia's specialist cargo carriers. The Yak-40 is a Soviet-designed short-range trijet regional aircraft, produced from 1966 through 1981 at the Saratov Aviation Plant. Over 1,000 airframes were delivered. Volga-Dnepr, based in Ulyanovsk, is best known for its Antonov An-124 heavy-lift operations; the Yak-40 represents the smaller, passenger-oriented end of its fleet history. This Herpa model, released in the September/October 2024 production cycle, marks a rare 1:200 treatment of Soviet regional jet equipment.

Livery & Visual Detail

The model features a predominantly white fuselage. Two thin parallel blue stripes run along the lower fuselage from nose to tail, curving upward toward the vertical stabilizer base. On the forward fuselage: "Volga-Dnepr" in blue Latin characters above, "ВОЛГА-Днепр" in blue Cyrillic below — both bilingual markings are rendered. A stylized Volga-Dnepr logo in blue and Russian tricolor (red, white, blue) appears on the vertical stabilizer. The registration "RA-87842" is printed on the rear fuselage in black. Red-painted wingtips and horizontal stabilizer tips are visible on the model. A Yak-40 type marking "Як-40" appears in black near the nose. The aircraft has a T-tail and low-sweep straight wings consistent with the Yak-40 design. Three rear-mounted turbofan engines are represented — two in underwing-style pods flanking the tail cone, and the center engine integrated into the fuselage tail with a visible exhaust.

Model Craft & Collector Value

Herpa item HE573146 is a diecast metal 1:200 model. At this scale the Yak-40 measures 10.18 cm length and 12.5 cm wingspan — the wingspan exceeds the length, reflecting the aircraft's notably broad-chord straight wing. Soviet-era regional jets in 1:200 are uncommon in the collector market; the Yak-40 mould is among the few precision treatments of this type available.
