1:500 Diecast: U.S. Air Force McDonnell Douglas KC-10A Extender 79-0433 (Herpa HE538381)
Serial 79-0433 (also displayed as 90433 on the tail), MSN 48200 (line number 311), is the first KC-10A Extender ever built. It first flew as N110KC in 1980 and was delivered to the USAF in October 1981. Operated initially by the 32nd Air Refueling Squadron, this aircraft served the Air Mobility Command mission for four decades before being transferred to the Air Mobility Command Museum at Dover AFB, Delaware, in April 2022, where it is now permanently preserved as a static exhibit.
Livery & Visual Details
Classic USAF white upper fuselage with light grey wings, empennage, and engine nacelles. A thin blue stripe runs horizontally along the lower mid-fuselage from the nose, with a narrow gold-yellow stripe above it. The nose cone is finished in darker blue. "U.S. AIR FORCE" appears in black capital letters on the forward port fuselage below the cockpit windows. "USAF" is printed vertically in large black letters on the vertical stabilizer. The national insignia—blue circle with white star and red bar—is applied to the upper left wing and the center engine housing. A U.S. flag is affixed to the right horizontal stabilizer, with the serial number "90433" below it. The aerial refueling boom is modeled in its stowed position at the rear. Tri-jet configuration: two under-wing pods and one S-duct center engine at the base of the tail. Engine intake rings carry a metallic silver finish. No winglets or wingtip devices.
Model Craftsmanship & Collectibility
Herpa Wings HE538381 captures the KC-10A in its operational USAF livery with the refueling boom accurately rendered—an essential detail for tanker collectors. The KC-10 derived from the DC-10-30CF and carried fuel, cargo, and passengers simultaneously. This is the only 1:500 scale Herpa model of the prototype KC-10A serial. Rolling gear, no stand.
