1:200 Diecast: Swissair Douglas DC-4 ZU-ILI "50th Anniversary Trans-Atlantic" (Herpa HE572491)

ZU-ILI (c/n 42984) is a Douglas DC-4-1009 built in 1946 and preserved by the South African Airways Historic Flight as ZS-AUB. In summer 1997, Swissair leased the aircraft to operate commemorative public flights marking the 50th anniversary of the airline's inaugural transatlantic services. The aircraft was temporarily assigned the registration ZU-ILI — "ZU" being South Africa's experimental aircraft prefix, while "ILI" honored the original Swissair DC-4 HB-ILI which served the route in the 1950s. Swiss authorities permitted the aircraft to also carry the HB-ILI marks for domestic Swiss flights during the tour. Public flights departed from Luxembourg, Zurich, and multiple Swiss cities throughout July 1997.

Livery & Visual Detail

Highly polished natural aluminum finish across the entire fuselage, representing the bare-metal look of the 1940s Swissair fleet. The upper vertical stabilizer is bright red bearing the white Swiss cross — the classic Swiss Air Lines tail signature. Black nose radome transitions to the polished silver fuselage. Along the mid-fuselage: "ZU-ILI • SWISS • AIR • LINES" in bold black sans-serif lettering, with bullet separators between each word element. Four radial piston engines in polished silver nacelles, each fitted with a three-blade propeller with yellow-tipped blades — a period-accurate detail for piston-era airliners. No winglets; classic rounded wingtips of the DC-4 generation.

Herpa diecast metal at 1:200 scale (item HE572491). The ZU-ILI commemorative tour was a unique single-summer event, and this Herpa release is among the only scale models of this specific registration and 1997 context. The DC-4's 1:200 form at 14.3 × 17.9 cm captures the wide, low-slung proportions of the four-engine piston classic.
