1:500 Diecast: Royal Air Force Lockheed C-130J Super Hercules ZH883 (Herpa). ZH883 was one of ten short-fuselage Hercules C5s ordered for the RAF in December 1994 and delivered from May 1999 onward. It wore a distinctive green anti-abrasion panel on its forward fuselage—a modification fitted by Marshall's of Cambridge to protect the airframe during rough-field operations. The aircraft also carried a special tail scheme marking 50 years of Marshall Aerospace support for the RAF Hercules fleet, paired with the Union Flag on the tail.
47 Squadron service: ZH883 was operated by 47 Squadron at RAF Brize Norton, a unit that traces its history to 1916 and became a transport squadron in 1946. The squadron received its first Hercules in 1968 and its first Super Hercules in 1999. The aircraft participated in the final RAF Hercules flypast on June 14, 2023, which marked the type's retirement after 56 years of service. The last two Hercules flights departed Brize Norton that morning, heading to Marshall Aerospace in Cambridge to be sold off with the rest of the fleet. The RAF officially retired its C-130J fleet on June 30, 2023.
New life in Bangladesh: ZH883 was one of five ex-RAF C-130Js purchased by the Bangladesh government in two batches during 2018 and 2019. Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group was awarded a multimillion-pound contract to overhaul and enhance the aircraft at Cambridge Airport. The upgrade included decommissioning the aircraft from RAF service, integrating state-of-the-art avionics, and installing capability enhancements for passenger transport and survival equipment. On June 25, 2024, the aircraft was formally handed over to the Bangladesh Air Force with the new serial 99-5481, later registered as S3-AGH. It now serves with 101 Special Flying Unit at Tejgaon Air Base in Dhaka, supporting humanitarian aid programmes and UN peacekeeping operations.
About this model: Herpa released ZH883 (item 537445) in 1:500 scale as a limited edition, capturing the aircraft in its final RAF configuration with the green anti-abrasion panel, the 50th Anniversary Marshall Aerospace tail scheme, and the Union Flag. At 7.45 cm long with a 60 mm wingspan, it features the six-blade composite propellers and air-to-air refueling probe above the cockpit that distinguish the C-130J. For collectors of RAF heritage, aircraft with distinctive special markings, or those tracking aircraft that continue service with other nations, this model represents a piece of British military aviation history now flying on in a new role.
