1:200 Diecast: Lufthansa Lockheed L-1649A "Super Star" D-ALUB (Herpa HE573030)
The Lockheed L-1649A Starliner — known in Lufthansa service as the "Super Star" — was the pinnacle of piston-era long-range air travel. D-ALUB carries construction number 1649-1034 and entered the Lufthansa fleet in 1957, the year the German carrier introduced the type on intercontinental routes. The L-1649A was the definitive stretch of the Constellation family, with a completely redesigned wing of 150-foot span that gave it a Frankfurt–New York non-stop range no other piston airliner could match. Powered by four Wright R-3350 Turbo Compound TC18EA1 eighteen-cylinder radial engines each driving three-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers, the Super Star was also the first Lufthansa aircraft to feature Senator Class, the airline's premium long-haul cabin. Lufthansa operated the type from 1957 until jet aircraft displaced it from frontline service. The actual D-ALUB airframe has since been partially preserved and is being meticulously restored by Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg.
Livery & Visual Details
The model replicates Lufthansa's late-1950s colour scheme: white upper fuselage over a polished natural-metal lower body, separated by a deep-blue and gold accent stripe at the waist. "LUFTHANSA" appears in blue on the forward upper cabin. The distinctive Lufthansa star-burst compass logo is applied to the forward fuselage in yellow and blue. "Super Star" lettering is visible in script on the upper cabin aft of the flight-deck windows. The four-engine nacelles are silver, with three-bladed propellers. The registration D-ALUB is on the upper wing surface and rear fuselage. Classic straight Starliner wingtips — no winglets. The model ships with a display stand.
Model Craft & Collectibility
Produced by Herpa Wings at 1:200 scale, item HE573030. Herpa's Constellation moulds are considered the reference standard for propeller-era collector models: the triple-bubble cross-section fuselage, the curved fish-tail empennage, and the under-wing nacelle arrangement are faithfully reproduced. The L-1649A is significantly less common in production runs than the earlier L-749 or L-1049 Super Constellation, making this release a focused acquisition for Lufthansa heritage collectors.
