1:200 Diecast: USAF Boeing KC-46A Pegasus 18-46049 (Geminijets G2AFO960). This aircraft is one of the most controversial tankers ever to enter U.S. Air Force service. Delivered in late 2020, it has faced years of technical setbacks—from boom binding issues costing millions, to structural cracks forcing multiple delivery halts. It has been photographed at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, home of units involved in earlier refueling incidents.
A troubled history: In 2025, structural cracks were discovered in multiple new KC-46As, temporarily pausing deliveries. On January 31, 2026, a KC-46A (callsign GOLD71) suffered an engine failure during takeoff at Moron Air Base in Spain—blowing eight tires and closing the runway for days, disrupting a major U.S. force movement to the Middle East. Just weeks later, on February 27, 2026, the USAF again suspended deliveries after cracks were found in aileron hinges of two aircraft.
Program under scrutiny: By March 2026, the KC-46A's mission capability rate remained at only 24%, with persistent deficiencies in its refueling boom. The Air Force withheld a $7.5 billion contract for 75 additional tankers until these issues are resolved. Boeing has absorbed over $8 billion in losses on the fixed-price program, with repairs to the vision system now expected by summer 2027.
About this model: Geminijets released 18-46049 (item G2AFO960) in April 2021 as part of their 1:200 scale "Gemini 200" series. It features detailed General Electric CF6-80C2 engines (60,200 lb thrust), realistic landing gear with rolling rubber tires, and a display stand. At 25.25 cm long, this diecast model captures a tanker that has made headlines for all the wrong reasons—a crucial but troubled asset the Air Force has no choice but to keep flying.
