It flew with Braniff International Airways, the Dallas–Fort Worth–headquartered carrier that operated from 1928 until its 1982 shutdown. The -227 designation is a customer-specific variant of the 727-200 series built for Braniff's domestic and inter-American network. N401BN wore the all-red "Red Jellybean" livery, one of the most recognizable Braniff color schemes from the late 1970s, developed as part of Alexander Girard's iconic End of the Plain Plane design program.
