1:400 Diecast: Airbus A340-500 F-WWTE "House Colors" — World's First A340-500 (Phoenix PH11915)
Airbus A340-500 MSN 394, registered F-WWTE, made the world's first flight of the A340-500 type on 11 February 2002, piloted by chief test pilot Jacques Rosay from Toulouse-Blagnac. The aircraft then served as the primary certification test airframe, accumulating the flight hours needed for the joint A340-500/600 type certification achieved on 3 December 2002. In 2003, MSN 394 was delivered to Emirates as A6-ERF, where it operated some of the world's earliest ultra-long-range nonstop services — including Dubai to Sydney at under 14 hours. The F-WWTE test registration on this Phoenix model therefore records the airframe at the precise moment it made aviation history.
Livery & Visual Details
This Phoenix model captures the Airbus house-colour test scheme at the time of F-WWTE's certification campaign. The white fuselage carries "A340-500" in blue type on the forward left side, and "THE LONGEST RANGE AIRCRAFT IN THE WORLD" in blue capital letters along the mid-fuselage — the boast the aircraft could legitimately make in 2002, with a 9,000-nautical-mile range exceeding every other airliner then certified. The vertical stabiliser shows "A340" in large white lettering on a dark blue upper section, with a multi-colour arc in orange, yellow, and red sweeping from the leading edge. The registration "F-WWTE" appears in small text near the tail. All four Rolls-Royce Trent 553 engine nacelles are white. Wingtip devices are small upturned winglet fences — consistent with the A340-500/600 series. Landing gear is extended.
Model Craft & Collectibility
Phoenix PH11915 is diecast alloy, 16.95 cm length, 15.93 cm wingspan at 1:400 scale. A quad-engine widebody in Airbus house colours represents a specialist niche: test-aircraft models appeal to type historians and Airbus fleet completionists. The A340-500 was produced in only 34 airframes; MSN 394 as the maiden-flight airframe is the most significant single registration in the type's history.
