N905NA is a Boeing 747-123, MSN 20107, line number 86. Originally delivered to American Airlines as N9668 on 29 October 1970, it was purchased by NASA on 18 July 1974 and converted into Shuttle Carrier Aircraft 905 (SCA-905). On 18 February 1977, N905NA conducted the first captive flight carrying Space Shuttle orbiter Enterprise (OV-101) from Dryden Flight Research Center — the beginning of the Approach and Landing Test (ALT) programme that proved the shuttle's glide-and-land capability. Over its NASA career, SCA-905 carried all five orbiters at various points. The aircraft was retired in October 2012 and preserved at Space Center Houston.

Livery & Visual Details

The 747 carrier wears the distinctive NASA SCA two-tone scheme: dark blue-grey upper fuselage and a light silver-grey lower fuselage, separated by a horizontal stripe sequence of white, red, and blue. "NASA" appears in bold red letters on the vertical stabilizer with "905" below it; registration "N905NA" sits on the aft lower fuselage. Three white mounting pylons connect the orbiter to the 747's upper fuselage. Enterprise (OV-101) is painted white with black nose cone, black thermal-protection leading edges, and "NASA" in block letters on the fuselage with "United States" beneath it; "Enterprise" is visible in black serif font below the cockpit, and "USA" appears on the left wing upper surface. The display stand base is engraved "BOEING 747 123 / Space Shuttle Carrier / N905NA / SCALE 1:400."

Patriot PT400023 presents the SCA-905 and Enterprise combination as a single 1:400 diecast set — the configuration flown on all five 1977 ALT free-flight tests. OV-101 never flew in space; it was built solely as an atmospheric test vehicle. This makes the piggyback configuration the primary — and historically complete — display state for Enterprise, and N905NA the only carrier it ever flew with.
