D-ABYA is a Boeing 747-830, MSN 37827 (line number 1443), delivered to Lufthansa in February 2012 as the carrier's first 747-8 Intercontinental. The registration D-ABYA carries historical weight: it was previously assigned to Lufthansa's very first Boeing 747-130, delivered in 1970, making the suffix a deliberate continuity marker across 40 years. Powered by four GEnx-2B engines, D-ABYA was selected to transport the German Olympic team to the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games — prompting a special livery applied ahead of the mission.
