1:400 Diecast: NASA Boeing 747-123/SCA N905NA "Yellow Stripe" (JC Wings XX40340)

N905NA, MSN 20107, started life as N9668 delivered to American Airlines in 1970. NASA acquired it in 1974 and converted it into the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA), one of two 747s purpose-modified to transport Space Shuttle orbiters on their upper fuselage. On February 18, 1977, N905NA performed the first captive flight carrying prototype orbiter Enterprise (OV-101) over Edwards Air Force Base — a defining moment in the Space Shuttle program. The aircraft carried orbiters Discovery, Challenger, Columbia, Atlantis, and Endeavour across dozens of ferry flights over three decades. N905NA was retired in 2012 and has been on permanent display at Space Center Houston since April 30, 2014, with orbiter Independence (a replica) mounted on top.

Livery & Visual Details

Upper fuselage and wings in polished bare metal (simulating the SCA's unpainted aluminum skin). Lower fuselage painted white. A horizontal tri-color stripe separates upper and lower surfaces: thin red at top, wider blue below, white at base. Vertical stabilizer in light grey with a prominent yellow band across the mid-section, "NASA" in bold black letters within the band, and "905" below it. Small American flag at the top of the fin. All four engine nacelles are light grey to match the fuselage. Classic blunt 747-100 wingtips — no winglets.

Model Craft & Collectibility

JC Wings XX40340 captures N905NA in its "Yellow Stripe" polished configuration — distinct from the companion XX40341 release that depicts the aircraft with an orbiter mounted on top. The standalone SCA release lets the carrier aircraft stand on its own historical merit. Diecast metal, 1:400 scale, with rolling landing gear.
