9V-SPK is a Boeing 747-412, MSN 28023, line number 1099. The aircraft made its first flight on 12 January 1997 and was delivered new to Singapore Airlines. On 31 October 2000, operating as flight SQ006 from Taipei Chiang Kai-shek International Airport, 9V-SPK struck construction barriers and equipment during a typhoon-affected takeoff roll, sustaining catastrophic damage. The aircraft was written off. MSN 28023 operated for less than four years and remains one of the most documented loss events in 747-400 history. The "Tropical" special livery it wore captures the airline at a specific moment in its golden era of 747 operations.

This is a special livery, not the standard Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer scheme. The fuselage carries a panoramic tropical beach mural: the upper fuselage transitions through shades of blue evoking sky and ocean; the mid-fuselage depicts a sandy beach motif in tan and light brown with a detailed palm tree illustration; the lower fuselage is painted in deep orange-red. "SINGAPORE AIRLINES" is printed in white capitals on the mid-fuselage alongside the Singapore national flag. A stylised script "S" or "SQ" motif appears prominently on the forward fuselage. The tail fin is dark navy blue bearing the gold Sarong Kebaya bird logo with an orange leading-edge stripe. Engine pylons and nacelles are light grey-silver. No winglets; the 747-412's wings terminate in straight classic raked tips. The model is the Flaps Down version. Landing gear is deployed.
