It made its first flight on January 14, 1971 and was delivered to Air Algérie on February 12, 1971, entering service as the airline's entry into the trijet era. The 727-2D6 variant is an extended-range -200 series ordered directly by Air Algérie. Powered by three Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines — two mounted on the aft fuselage, one at the tail root — the 727 carried Air Algérie passengers on North African and European routes for over three decades before being scrapped at Algiers around 2004.
