5N-HAS (MSN 45912) is one of the more unusual registrations to carry AeroPeru's livery. The 5N- prefix belongs to Nigeria, indicating the airframe was operating under a non-Peruvian registration during its AeroPeru service — a common arrangement when South American carriers wet-leased or sub-leased narrowbody jets in the 1970s and 1980s. AeroPeru itself was Peru's state flag carrier, founded on 22 May 1973 and operating until 10 March 1999. The DC-8-61, the stretched first variant of the DC-8 family at 57.1 metres, was the backbone of many Latin American long-haul fleets of that era.
