N18815 is a Boeing 747-228F/SCD carrying MSN 20887, line number 245. The airframe completed its first flight on 11 September 1974 and was delivered to Air France on 4 October 1974. It entered service as a dedicated freighter — one of the earliest purpose-built 747 freighters in the Air France fleet — serving high-density cargo routes out of Paris CDG. The aircraft operated under this registration until April 1982, when it was reregistered F-BPVO within the Air France fleet. It later transferred to Cargolux as LX-DCV in 1991, then Atlas Air in 1995. Four GE CF6-50E2 turbofans power the 747-228F variant.

The fuselage is white with a bold blue cheatline running from nose to tail. "AIR FRANCE cargo" is printed in large blue uppercase letters across the mid-fuselage — in the historic 1970s typeface used before the later Cassandre-style branding. A blue triangular Air France arrow logo appears on the forward fuselage. The French tricolour flag is printed forward of the nose. The nose features the side cargo door SCD configuration.
