The L-1649A was the definitive stretch of the Constellation family, with a completely redesigned wing of 150-foot span that gave it a Frankfurt–New York non-stop range no other piston airliner could match. Powered by four Wright R-3350 Turbo Compound TC18EA1 eighteen-cylinder radial engines each driving three-bladed Hamilton Standard propellers, the Super Star was also the first Lufthansa aircraft to feature Senator Class, the airline's premium long-haul cabin. Lufthansa operated the type from 1957 until jet aircraft displaced it from frontline service.
